GM Cars & Crossovers: Equinox, Traverse, Malibu, Impala & More
GM infotainment failures aren’t limited to trucks and SUVs. Cars and crossovers use the same HMI modules. While failures are less common in cars (due to lower heat and vibration), they still occur—especially after 6+ years of operation.
Which Models Use HMI and When
Chevy Models:
- Equinox (2018-2019 with HMI; older models use different system)
- Traverse (2018-2020 with HMI)
- Malibu (2016-2018 with HMI; note 2016 Limited does NOT have HMI)
- Impala (2014-2020 with HMI)
GMC Models:
- Acadia (2017-2019 with HMI)
Buick Models:
- Enclave (2018-2020 with HMI)
- LaCrosse (2017-2019 with HMI)
- Encore (2017-2019 with HMI)
- Envision (2016-2019 with HMI)
- Regal (2018-2019 with HMI)

Interface Names: MyLink vs IntelliLink vs CUE
GM brands use different marketing names for the same underlying HMI module:
- MyLink: Chevy brand name for HMI-based infotainment
- IntelliLink: GMC and Buick brand name for same system
- CUE (Cadillac User Experience): Cadillac brand name, same HMI module underneath
Different UI and styling, but mechanically the same HMI module. Replacement process and module types are identical across brands.
HMI Versions in Cars & Crossovers
2014-2015: HMI 2.0 (no CarPlay)
2016+: HMI 2.5 (CarPlay/Android Auto)
Cars and crossovers with 2014-2015 model years use HMI 2.0. Newer models use 2.5. See our HMI generations guide for details.
Why Cars Fail Less Often
Cars experience less extreme conditions than trucks:
- Lower ambient engine temperatures (car engines don’t tow)
- Less vibration and shock (no towing, smoother roads)
- Lower electrical loads (no integrated trailer connectors or aux power draws)
However, cars still fail if age and manufacturing defects align. A 2014 Impala with HMI 2.0 is just as likely to fail as a 2014 Silverado after similar mileage.
Installation Location Varies by Model
Unlike trucks where HMI is consistently behind the glove box, cars and crossovers place modules in different locations:
- Some behind center console
- Some under passenger dashboard
- Some integrated into dashboard assembly
Installation difficulty ranges from simple (30 min) to moderate (45-60 min). Contact WAMS with your VIN for exact location and installation requirements for your specific model.
Repair Costs
Dealer replacement for cars/crossovers typically runs $800-1,500 depending on how difficult dashboard access is. WAMS factory-new modules save you hundreds—often 40-60% less than dealer pricing.
