CSM vs HMI — Completely Different Modules

CSM (Center Stack Module) arrived with the latest GM platform redesigns. Some people call it “HMI 3.0,” but this is a misnomer. CSM is not an evolution of HMI—it’s a complete architectural replacement.

What’s the Difference?

HMI (2013-2020): Bosch-designed module, standard connectors, firmware-based programming, Global A architecture

CSM (2017+): New OEM design, different physical connectors, Global A and B architecture depending on vehicle.

Which Vehicles Have Which

HMI: 2013-2019 Silverado/Sierra, Tahoe/Suburban/Yukon, Camaro, Corvette C7, CTS, ATS, most cars/crossovers from that era

CSM: 2019+ Silverado/Sierra (T1), 2021+ Tahoe/Suburban/Yukon, newer CT5, CT4, and Cadillac models

Can I Swap Them?

No. Physical connectors are incompatible. Electrical architecture is completely different. Programming is different. An HMI won’t fit in a CSM vehicle and vice versa.

How to Tell Which You Have

Easiest way: Check the fitment guide for the HMI and CSM items on the WAMS website.

Or contact WAMS with your VIN for exact confirmation.

CSM Replacement from WAMS

WAMS provides factory-new CSM modules for 2017.5+ platforms, also pre-programmed to your VIN and plug-and-play.

Don’t Confuse Them

Ordering an HMI replacement for a CSM vehicle (or vice versa) wastes money and won’t solve your problem. Always verify which module type your vehicle has before ordering.
